Newmarket How To Train A Cat To Use A Cat Flap

Some cats will approach a cat flap with curiosity, while others may be a bit more wary. Here is five easy steps to help get your cat using its new cat flap.

Cats have a natural desire to be outside, so don’t worry if your cat won’t use the cat flap at first – this is usually only a minor obstacle. Providing your pet with a cat flap will give her regular and easy access to the outdoors for exercise, mental stimulation and toilet trips, without relying on you to let her in and out every time.

If you got your cat as a kitten, six months is the perfect age to train her to use a cat flap. At this stage, cats should be vaccinated, and mature enough to go outside on their own. But you can follow these tips with a cat of any age; just be prepared to be a bit more patient with older cats who may not have used a cat flap before. As profesional cat flap fitters we belive these five steps should soon help your pet overcome any initial feline nerves and get them using the cat flap with confidence

1. Introduce the cat flap
Initially, keep the cat flap locked, and begin by simply feeding and playing with your cat nearby. Anything you can do to create positive associations with the cat flap, such as leaving food treats in front of it, is helpful.

2. Open the cat flap
Prop the cat flap open with heavy-duty tape to make an inviting opening for your cat to move through. Timid cats, especially, will appreciate being able to look out and see what awaits them on the other side.

3. Use rewards
With a person on either side of the open cat flap, use high-value food treats (perhaps some chicken or fish, or other favorite snack) to entice your cat in or out. Alternatively, you could use a toy to tempt her through the opening.

4. Take it slowly
Repeat the above a few times a day, for a week or so. Some cats will quickly become confident moving through the cat flap, while others may take longer to get used to the idea. Never force your cat through the opening, especially if you sense resistance from her. As with all training , practice makes perfect. This is really about creating natural confidence in your cat.

5. Drop the cat flap door
As your cat becomes more familiar with the opening, you can then drop the flap, so that she has to push lightly to open it. Once she’s comfortable doing this, she should be able to come and go as she pleases whenever you leave the cat flap unlocked.

We're afraid not as the glass is already toughened when you try to cut it and the glass would break into hundreds of thousands of pieces!

It varies, but usually takes around 1 hour to install a cat flap in wood, UPVC, metal or a composite door, if it is a cat flap in glass or a double glazed unit, the glass will be toughened safety glass and usually take 3-5 working days to remanufacture and about 30 minuites to install again subject to type and style of door or frame.

  1. We would arrange to visit your home or property at a convenient time to get an exact measurement of the current double glazed unit in the door, check what pattern you have and offer a like for like or an alternative if the glass is no longer manufactured.
  2. We would then cut 2 new pieces of 4mm float glass (plain or pattern of your choice) to the exact size as measured, cut a hole in both pieces of glass for the cat flap and then have the glass toughened. (What is toughened glass).
  3. Approximately 2-3 day later the cat flap glass will be ready to collect from the toughening plant.
  4. We will then create a sealed doubel glazed unit which will have the hole perfectly placed for the installation of the cat flap.
  5. We will then arrange a convenient time with you to replace your current double glazed unit with the new cat flap ready double glazed sealed unit.
  6. The cat flap is installed once at the property

Just be prepared to be a bit more patient with older cats who may not have used a cat flap before. Use a food reward for your cat and try playing in close by so they get used to being nect to it. Leave the flap open so they can see outside as curiosity will entice them closer until they eventually go through it.

No - The cat flap/catflap must be glass fitting and circular as it is very expensive to cut a square hole, although not impossible.

Yes you can, if it is single or double glazed, then the glass will need to be replaced by an expoerianced glazier or glass company who can offer you a price for the replacement cost.

Cat flaps come with a kit that includes a paper template that guides you exactly where to drill. With the help of markings, drill a hole in to each corner of the template. Once you have done with drilling the holes, you can get the shape of your cat flap accordingly. These are great for wooden, UPVC/plastic and metal doors, but would recommend a professionaal for anything to do with glass.

No - The glass in the door should already be toughened and you can not cut toughened glass, so we will need to replace the unit (worth hanging on to the double glazed unit we take ut as should you move or need to put this back at a later date will save you some money).

Do You Fit Into Cavity Walls.

We DO NOT install through cavity walls; we recommend that you hire a professional builder for this type of installation.

Cat flap installation in a brick wall has many pitfalls; it is messy, expensive and time-consuming. there may be pipes or wires we can not see.

If this is your preferred route or only option you have for your home, we strongly advise you to consult with a qualified builder before considering installing a pet door through a wall, always ensure they have relevant building experience, qualifications, insurance and that they can comply with all building regulations.
